Microphallus is a rare medical condition which is also known as micro penis syndrome or micropenis. It’s when a man has an extremely small penis even when in a fully erect phase. An adult male suffering from this condition usually has a penis measuring at or less than 2.6″ with an erection.

This uncommon occurrence affects less than one percent of males, to be more accurate it is more like sixth tenths of one percent.

This ailment can be identified in many situations right after birth, but in many cases men who aren’t diagnosed at infancy go their whole lives suffering from the condition without seeking treatment. The reasons are obvious, it can be an embarrassing situation for an adult male.

Treating Micro Penis Syndrome

Effective treatment of Micro Penis usually needs to occur before puberty. There are surgical options for adult men dealing with Microphallus but studies have shown that gains are not sufficient enough to increase the size of the penis to what is considered an average sized organ.

Better results have been reported with youths or teens who have yet to reach puberty. Hormone shots and testosterone regimen are a common treatments for micropenis.

In the mid 1960′s to about early 80′s doctors were performing what is known as sex reassignment surgeries for boys born with Microphallus. Sex reassignment simply put was the process of turning a boy into a girl by removal of his testicles and small penis and constructing an artificially produced vagina with the permission of the parents. This procedure was widely frowned upon by many and was discontinued in the 1980′s.

Causes of Microphallus

Even though it affects the male sexual and reproductive organ the condition does not always related with sex chromosomes. Not all factors are known but usually an unusually low production of growth hormones can be the cause. Other medical conditions which relate to low production of testosterone and hormones can cause micro penis.
